Born Romantic

Inspired by the script "Born Romantic" by Joshua Friedlander

You call me a born romantic
And if what you say is true
Then you could run away forever
And I’d always be next to you

Although we met as strangers
With our own specific plot
We walked away true lovers
Whether you’ll admit it or not

And nothing can stop a born romantic
Nothing can stop a born romantic
No, nothing can stop a born romantic
When it comes to love

You fought to regain my honor
I’d fight for yours as well
You fed me lies and French food
We played some kiss and tell

We talked until the cab came
I wanted you so bad
We kissed before you left forever
At least that’s the dream I had

Cause nothing can stop a born romantic
Nothing can stop a born romantic
No, nothing can stop a born romantic
When it comes to love

It was something out of Shakespeare
A tragedy exposed
You played the role of Macbeth
And made me Banquo’s ghost

Now we’re a few years older
Perhaps we’re wiser too
Perhaps you’ll hear this wherever you are
And still feel what I feel for you

Cause nothing can stop a born romantic
Nothing can stop a born romantic
Nothing can stop a born romantic
When it comes to love

No, nothing can stop a born romantic
Nothing can stop a born romantic
Even if you cross the blue Atlantic
When it comes to love

No, nothing can stop a born romantic
Nothing can stop a born romantic
Even when the distance seems gigantic
When it comes to love

Soccer's Sad Lexicon

These are the saddest of possible words:
"Rapinoe, to Wambach, or Morgan”
Stonger then lions, and fleeter than birds,
“Rapinoe, to Wambach, or Morgan”
Ruthlessly pricking our hopes for a title,
Scoring with the precision of a dancing recital
Words that are heavy, scary, and vital:
“Rapinoe, to Wambach, or Morgan”

Miami

You called me last night
On the telephone
And I was glad to hear from you
Cause I was all alone

You said, "It's raining! It's raining!
God I hate this weather!"
Now I would walk through a hurricane
Just to get us back together

We met in the summer
At the picture show
And it was at the Hot Moon Cafe
When it was time to go

We kissed in your car
In the middle of the night
I held your hand, you held mine
It was the best night of my life

Cause everyone's your friend in Miami
And everything is beautiful
When you're young and pretty
The streets are paved with diamonds
And there's just so much to see
But the best thing about Miami is....
You and me!

The Fountain Blue Hilton
South Beach and Bayside
Mayfair, the Planetarium

Biscayne Bay
The Metro Rail
Coco Walk
The Seaquarium

Vizcaya and Washington Square
Coconut Grove... Wish I was there

You sent me an email
Just the other day
Said, "Winter time is coming soon,
So why don't you come to stay?"

I packed my bag
It's on the plane
I can't believe it's true
I'm five hours from Miami
And I'm five hours from you!

Cause everyone's your friend in Miami
And everything is beautiful
When you're young and pretty
The streets are paved with diamonds
And there's just so much to see
But the best thing about Miami is....
You and me!

A New Way

You told me yesterday that my love is not sufficient
Cause I didn't say those words you want enough
I swore up and down it's not the phrase that proves my deep commitment
But you simply left and said, "I call your bluff"

Now, I'm romantic and creative, I think this is understood
And I don't give up too easy when I can't succeed
And often times my scheming mind will lead me to no good
But for this task it's exactly what I need

(Chorus)
I'll find a new way to say that I love you
I get tired of repeating the same old line
So I'll tell you through my action
I'll be adding by subtraction
And the things I do are sure to make you mine

I followed you and stole your car when you were at the store
And filled it full of chocolates hood to tail
I parked it so you'd see the moment you walked out the door
Before the candy melted and I ended up in jail

I write you poems and leave you notes in lip stick on the glass
And I clean the house before you get home from work
And I've lately found that leaving the room on days that I have gas
Has made you think me far less of a jerk

Yes, it's a new way to say that I love you
I get tired of repeating the same old line
So I'll tell you through my action
I'll be adding by subtraction
And the things I do are sure to make you mine

I tape your favorite shows when you're not at home to see them
And I make you music mixes for your daily commute
I've stopped complaining when you make me have dinner with your folks
And sometimes I even give you the remote

I've been taking the time to work out and be healthy
Cause I know you like me svelt instead of stout
And I've even started saving cash though I know I'll never be wealthy
But it'll help me get that ring that I've picked out

Yes, it's a new way to say that I love you
I get tired of repeating the same old line
So I'll tell you through my action
I'll be adding by subtraction
And the things I do are sure to keep you mine

The King Of Wasted Potential

IQ tested one nine three
There ain’t no flies on me
But I hated school cause getting up early really sucks
I always was a whiz
But I preferred show biz
And what I guessed should be a life of ease overflowed with megabucks

Cause I love to act
And I love to sing
Why has no one put me in a movie yet?

So laugh at me
As you walk on by
Don’t be kind, don’t be sentimental
Cause I am the king of wasted potential
Live my life
Above it all
I’m so cool and so existential
Yes I am the king of wasted potential

Got a job behind a desk
It makes me feel grotesque
I was never meant for menial labor or anything that isn’t any fun
Why can’t the world see
The genius that is me?
Is it because I’ve never finished anything that I’ve ever begun?

I make up stories well
Why do they never sell?
Don’t give me shit about agents and publications

So laugh at me
As you walk on by
Don’t be kind, don’t be sentimental
Cause I am the king of wasted potential
Live my life
Unemployed
Work is boring and it’s inconsequential
Yes, I am the king of wasted potential

Scored a perfect SAT
How hard could life be?
All I have to do is be alive and I can’t help but to succeed
Great at everything I try
I’m quite sure I could fly
Though I have no wings, this I happily concede

And my poetry
Is pure brilliancy
Don’t read it, it’s too good for you anyway

So laugh at me
As you walk on by
Don’t be kind, don’t be sentimental
Cause I am the king of wasted potential
Effort is
Without need
Perfection for me is just quintessential
Yes, I am the king of wasted potential

And I play guitar
Wanna be a star
Aw fuck it I’m too lazy to even finish this damned song---

Destiny

The pregnant woman pauses first
To let the blind man snooze
I wander crooked columned aisles
In search of arcane news
The copper colored corsair
Slides off silently to sea
To meet a tragic rocky end
On the shores of destiny

When slivered moons all slip their moores
And float off into space
I steal inside the mongrel’s cage
To rearrange the fates
The platinum priest’s red palanquin
Is burned as bourgeoisie
Cause coins will never buy your way
In the church of Destiny

The tiny tasseled tulip girl
Sells nightshade on the side
I wait for dawn to come and go
That I might hitch a ride
The golden gabled castle door
Stands wide for all to see
The horror and the beauty
In the hall of destiny

In songs of ancient paradox
The wise men drown their fears
I duck behind the tolling bell
To avoid the constant jeers
The torquiose truncheoned sodomite
Shall launch the jubilee
But no amount of joy withstands
The march of Destiny

Poetic Interlude #3 - Stories

ACCOUSTIC BLUE

Through sick satanic cities where the darkness never ends
I drive my ancient Datsun searching for my long lost friend
The guitar I was taught on but had to sell to save my skin
Many years ago in Buffalo, but I will track it down again

Cause I want it back

I was cold and I was hungry and I was living in my car
Plucking chords of alabaster like a glorious rock star
And the money that was offered wouldn’t take me very far
But I made the deal to buy a meal and live to play some more

Now I want it back
My balsa wood guitar
I want it bad
Acoustic blue
I won’t be happy
Until she’s on my knee
And I’m strumming along that same old song
That means so much to me

Now the years that rolled behind me have been fortunate and fun
My music‘s made me as famous as the moon and rising sun
And I’ve no regrets to speak of except this single one
But I’ll do my best to end this quest I won’t stop til I’m done

Cause I want it back
My balsa wood guitar
I want it bad
Acoustic blue
I won’t be happy
Until she’s on my knee
And I’m strumming along that same old song
That means so much to me

The man I met in Buffalo gave my guitar to his son
Who traded if for cocaine to a Czechoslovakian
This Czech lost it in Reno while running from a gun
It seemed from there to disappear like I snowflake in the sun

I reacquired the trail where the Nile river flows
From a man who spoke no English until I paid him through the nose
He sent me out to China where I stopped to buy a rose
And here I stand with pick in hand cause I know I’m getting close

And I want it back
My balsa wood guitar
I want it bad
Acoustic blue
I won’t be happy
Until she’s on my knee
And I’m strumming along that same old song
That means so much to me

THE COURT OF MAGIC

Here yea, here yea, here yea
The court of magic is now in session
The honorable judge Houdini presiding
Y’all may be seated

Here in the court of magic
mysteries divine and tragic
Play themselves on center stage
The lawyers hate each other
They shout at one another
until the judge gets in a rage

And then there’s order in the courtroom
“Guilty”, screams jurors one to ten
Johnny stands to hear his sentence
for killing 67 men

The judge pounds his gavel hard
and calls out for a guard
As he looks Johnny in the eye
“You’ve got a cross to bear
for a good hundred years.
You’ll be in jail until you die.”

But Johnny says, “Hey,
I don’t really mind.”
Johnny says, “Hey,
I can do the time.”
He walks in silence escorted to his cell
It’s not heaven, but its’ surely not hell

Back to the courtroom action
there is no satisfaction
As we begin another case
Tony says, “I didn’t do it.”
Judge says, “You’ll have to prove it.”
Looks like we’re in for a race

And then there’s order in the courtroom
“Guilty”, screams the judicial throng
Tony stands to hear his sentence
for doing absolutely nothing wrong

The judge pounds his gavel hard
and calls out for a guard
As he looks Tony in the eye
“You’ve got a cross to bear
for a good hundred years.
You’ll be in jail until you die.”

But Tony says, “Hey,
you got it wrong this time.”
Tony says, “Hey,
I didn’t commit a crime.”
Tony grabs the judges throat
and squeezes til he’s dead
So the bailiff put a bullet into Tonys’ head

And then there’s order in the courtroom
A juror starts to climb the wall
A lawyer calls for a mistrial
to obtain justice for all
-------------------------
Johnny heard the gunshot inside his jail cell
A smile touched his lips and then it fell
Next day he was transferred to the state pen
Alone in a prison with a million other men
By September Johnny had a spoon
He tunneled out, was in Cleveland by June

Watch out Johnny don’t look back
Watch out Johnny don’t leave a track
You can’t kill people and expect to get away
Just ask Tony and this is what he’d say

Give me order in the courtroom
For I must plead my case
The court of magic is in session
Where liberty and justice are in disgrace

UNTITLED

In the middle of a maze one night I lay under a tree
When at once I did see
A creature had come up to my side
Its clothes were black, its face dark
It stole my air in a forceful kiss
Terrified I met its eyes and in shear surprise
Did I realize that which held my gaze
Under a tree in the middle of a maze
Could never hurt me your see
For that creature was me
The bloody eyed scar jawed animal of a thing
With its rusty skin, thin lips, and blades of teeth
Pierced my tongue
As I tasted hot blood reality left me, my mind took flight
Far away from this monstrous sight
Where pins danced on the wind
And needles ruled for they had eyes

I saw nothing, but I felt the presence of the creature
It had followed me to the world that none may enter without my own permission
The creature had power
And it spoke in a voice not unlike my own
But it fluttered between tenor and baritone

“The days are mine, the nights your own
and in them you must seek life’s tastiest bone.”

“Easy”, said I, “as you know my life is charmed.”

To which the creature was not alarmed.
“That it is”, said it, “And that may be. But from now on
those who see you shall only know me.
Hurt you it will in seeking your goal
Of finding the woman to soothe your soul.
Until you’ve found her you will not sleep
For I now control your dreams.”

“How could I possibly find one to love this creature that is we”,
said I to me?

And I saw it now for it filled my sight
The bottle that had kept me out of the light had shattered
I had returned to see the creature that is me.

It laughed suddenly and raised its arms
For a moment I saw its silhouette in the moon rays
Then I was alone under a tree in the middle of a maze

JEALOUSY

Got the call from my buddy Jack at half past nine
He said he’d seen her at the Double Q
I took off like a rocket stuffing bullets in my pocket
Man, I knew just what I had to do
I was so angry I forgot to bring my gun along
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy will be the end of me

I raced to the saloon and I burst into the room
No one paid me a lick of attention
I walked up to barman Scott
And I ordered up a shot
As I waited for divine intervention
Now where is that girl she’s got to be around here some place
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy is about all I can see

Once upon a time little Katie was all mine
But I knew it wouldn’t come to no good
Every time she left my sight to get a beer or grab a bite
I was sure she was slutting round the neighborhood
She must a had a hundred affairs in my imagination
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy will never let me be

It was about this time that I caught a whiff
A scent that I knew very well
Drifting through the air above the sweat, below the beer
It was Katie’s perfume that I could smell
My eyes clouded over as I grabbed a corkscrew off the bar
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy has got a hold of me

Well blood spurted up to the ceiling
I lost the corkscrew stuck in some guy’s throat
He screamed and he cried, and he farted then he died
The band on the stage didn’t drop a note

By now my nose had taken over
I was sniffing up every guy I passed
Each time I did smell, that Coco by Chanel
I swear that man’s next breath was his last
I must have killed a dozen before the cops ever showed up
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy will not set me free

Shortie took a fork in the eyeball
Baldie choked to death on my fist
I got hold of a guitar, started smashing skulls apart
Lopped another guy’s hands off at the wrist

The last guy got my bullets shoved into his mouth
Until they overflowed
Somewhere I found a camera and used it like a hammer
And made those little dumb-dumbs explode
There was nothing left of his face by the time it was over
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy makes for good tragedy

I was pretty tired when the cops stormed the bar
They had me in cuffs in the blink of an eye
That’s when I noticed Jack at the bar with an empty perfume jar
Kissing Katie and waving goodbye
That son of a bitch, he sure done me wrong
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy tricked the hell out of me
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy will be the death of me

Poetic Interlude #2 - Ramblings

ELEGY

This could be a happy day
Or this could be the saddest occasion I ever knew
I’m coming home to you
In awkward smiles and tongue ties
In loneliness and playful cries
I’m coming home to you
Will you take me in
And take me out
And never lie and never shout
I’m all alone
So go away
Just hold me now and always
Stay
True to things you love the most
And leave the rest
To darken the early spring
Like the sacred songs we sing
Will you push me out
Or close me in
And never die and never sin
You’re all alone
So stay away
Just hold me now and always
Pray
To a god if there’s such a thing
I once heard
When snow was still new to my eyes
That stranger things exist

This could be a happy day
But why stop there
With so much more out there to fear
I’m coming home to you
---------------------------------------------------
ODE TO TULL

Oh can't you see, I'm just trying to help you out
Your scream's but a whisper, my silence a shout
If you seek the proper path, stay clear of the road
You can't free your hands til you let go your load
Of useless inspiration and lonely greed
Of quiet degradation and selfish need
Of boring contemplation that you feed
To the few
That you screw

Await the revolt, it's certain to start
And the vestible claw will run through your heart
Only with wisdom can the challenge be met
So you'd better remember what you'd have them forget
Like it's never wise to bite the hand that feeds
And the more love you spurn the more contempt you breed
And you shouldn't take lightly all the needs
Of the few
That you screw

Cause the few will rise up and then you'll see
That your plans will blow away like so much steam
And though you try to fight, what will block your dreams
Will be the few
That you screw
-------------------------------------------------------------
WHITE RECLUSE SAPIEN

I see between the anger
All the guns that fill their hands
Shooting flags of death commands
While survivors group in bands
And try to plan a way to alleviate the tension

Should I join the fight
Or should I hide inside my cave
Pretending I too could be brave
Though it’s my own life that I save
As I back away from divine intervention

Cause there is nothing that I want
Except my freedom and my peace
As they fill me full of grease
To help me slither with more ease
Down the long dark rusty pipe of discontentment

And if you gazed upon my soul
As it was basking in the dark
You would never see the spark
That keeps me in front of the shark
And leaves me looking up ahead with such resentment
-------------------------------------------------------
I LOVE PARIS IN THE WINTER

Climbed to the top of the Eiffel Tower
I'm sweaty wanna take a shower
Until the cool breeze
Gives me the most wonderful freeze

You can't jump from the top
But, baby if you could
I'd take your hand and fly
All the way to Hollywood

I think we'd make it if we try
I'm telling you it's just that high

I took a ride that day
On the Paris Underground
They don't tell you how bad it smells
Or how noisy it sounds

You've got to mind the gap
Or ya might fall on the track
I wouldn't trust the train to stop
And then I'd never get back

Home to Hollywood
And that would not be good

I walked through Pere La Chaise
Cause I'm that kinda brave
Five Euro if I win the race
First one to Morrison's grave

I took the cash I won
Got us what we want
Cadbury fingers for you
For me a chocolate croissant

Only in Paris can I eat this good
That must be understood
I think my next stop might be Rome
But, it' always nice to come home

Oh home to Hollywood
My perfect between vacation 'hood

Poetic Interlude #1 - Women

AS DYLAN AS I GET

Don’t ask me to call out your name girl
I wouldn’t even if I could
The tears have choked me so much it’s a shame girl
And my voice don’t work so good
Your leaving me was surely no surprise
And how you did it forced me to realize
I couldn’t have been worth too much in your eyes
But, don’t think twice, it’s alright

Violence never was your style girl
Causing scenes was more your speed
A cry for help, a statement of denial girl
Cunning barbs to make me bleed
You ran the tab so high, you couldn’t foot the bill
You wanted me to pay and you expect it still
You’ll just keep waiting with your finger in the till
Oh, don’t think twice, it’s alright

You had your day in court, I had mine girl
I wonder what all did it prove
You said I changed that I had crossed the line girl
And drove you to make that move
You left me hanging when I needed you to stay
Somebody else’s bed was calling you away
But, your needs were always more important anyway
So, don’t think twice, it’s alright

The years that have passed have not been kind girl
Happiness screeches to a halt
Since you believe in the grand design girl
Then nothing could ever be your fault
But, if there’s something to this karma stuff
If it’s not just another cosmic bluff
I can rest comfortably knowing you’re gonna get it rough
And don’t think twice, it’s alright
---------------------------------------------------------
EASY GIRL

I’ll tell my story I’m a guy who is grieved
By a penchant for women who can’t be believed
Their sinfulness oozes from beauty that captures my soul

Maybe it’s just me I can’t get too much
Sick in the psyche attracted to their touch
When decadence drains from their kisses I’m left with a hole

(Chorus)
Because the girls I date are always pretty picky
Which translates into affairs that are sticky
Can’t I just for once find an easy girl

Someone to love and trust someone who won’t hurt me
Is it too much for her to be hot and dirty
Can’t I just for once find an easy girl

Jenny, Keri, Heidi, and Hailey
Girl after girl has tried to derail me
Push them away but I go out and find more

So why do they want me I’ve nothing to give
Don’t even have enough money to live
The meaner I get the more they line up at my door

(Chorus)
Because the girls I date are always pretty picky
Which translates into affairs that are sticky
Can’t I just for once find an easy girl

Someone to love and trust someone who won’t hurt me
Is it too much for her to be hot and dirty
Can’t I just for once find an easy girl

Pick up the pieces with far too much ease
Lock up the closets with skeleton keys
Will nothing break me from this cycle of debauchery?

Know what I want but I never get it
That’s just a lie but I’ll never admit it
I get what I want but I want what I do not need

(Chorus)
Because the girls I date are always pretty picky
Which translates into affairs that are sticky
Can’t I just for once find an easy girl

Someone to love and trust someone who won’t hurt me
Is it too much for her to be hot and dirty
Can’t I just for once find an easy girl
-----------------------------------------------------
GREEN EYES

O that the radiance of your eyes
Would on mine befall
Without guile or guise
In love deemed mutual
For this I surely strive
To Sydney or Tokyo
As long as I'm alive
J'vous suit partout

Yet, you've no want nor need
At least tis this you know
And thus I must plant the seed
Of consciousness soon to grow
And love will rightly blossom
As I know was destined to be
Cold jade eyes to some
Will shine like emeralds for me
-------------------------------------------------
YEUX - TROIS COULEURS

She holds me down with upper hands and ties me up in strings
She keeps me waiting by the phone for the message that she brings
Her brown eyes sing a cunning tale of sadistic misery
‘The Wall’ on acid can’t describe just what she does to me
In between extremes I linger, haunted by tainted fear
Laughed at by bondsmen who cry by career
Strangely silhouetted in screens of sugared silk
Sacrificed though my only crime was tasting of her milk
Thus I spill out, trickling to and fro
Attempting to hold her fast as she works to let me go
Lost until she loves
Loved until she loathes
Loathed until she leaves
Left until she is replaced

She holds me fast with shapeliness, between her thighs a whip
It’s the same trap I once laughed at and told my friends to skip
For beauty’s sake I wear the marks and let them giggle a bit
Exposed upon the water their punches never hit
Grounded though, she bores me with infantile malaise
A quick-stepped sunny-sided mechanical disgrace
Her blue eyes are about as deep as a toilet bowl and it may be time to flush
But a cursory glance is all it takes to ask myself, “what’s the rush?”
Yes, of course I linger, perhaps a bit too long
But in the end it’s not me to point out something’s wrong
Eroded until it arrives
Arrived after it ends
Ended and yet it echoes
Echoed until she was replaced

She holds me up with backhands and tracks me down by lies
Could it be my future I see in those green eyes
A subtle mix of roses, romance, and reliance
Not a thing to justify my random acts of defiance
It’s there for the taking, yet I can not get a grip
Patiently, she chalks herself and still my hands slip
She is my perfection and she loves me genuinely
I feel the same for her, then do what comes naturally
Scoop me up
Sell my soul
Light another Marlboro
Of course she too will have to be replaced…
Eventually

Jealousy - A Murder Ballad

I'm a huge fan of Nick Cave and especially love his Murder Ballads. I've always wanted to try my hand at them. Last night an idea came to me and I went with it. So, without further ado here is my first of hopefully many Murder Ballads:

It was Katie’s perfume that I did smell
Well, my eyes clouded over as I grabbed a corkscrew off the bar
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy has got a hold of me

Well blood spurted up to the ceiling
I lost the corkscrew stuck in some guy’s throat
He screamed and he cried, and he farted then he died
The band on the stage didn’t drop a note

By now my nose had taken over
I was sniffing up every guy I passed
Each time I did smell, that Coco by Chanel
I swear that man’s next breath was his last
I must have killed a dozen before the cops ever showed up
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy will not set me free

Shortie took a fork in the eyeball

I got hold of a guitar, started smashing skulls apart
Lopped another guy’s hands off at the wrist

The last guy got my bullets shoved into his mouth
Until they overflowed
Somewhere I found a camera and used it like a hammer
And made those little dumb-dumbs explode
There was nothing left of his face by the time it was over
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy makes for good tragedy

I was pretty tired when the cops stormed the bar
They had me in cuffs in the blink of an eye
That’s when I noticed Jack at the bar with an empty perfume jar
Kissing Katie and waving goodbye
That son of a bitch, he sure done me wrong
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy tricked the hell out of me
La la la la. La la la lee
Jealousy will be the death of me
